Mayor Piang Files COC under LP

Upi Comelec Officer III, received the Certificate of Candidacies (COCs) of Upi incumbent Mayor Ramon A. Piang Sr.

Mayor Piang a former principal of Notre Dame of Upi, a local high school managed by the Archdiocesan Notre Dame Schools of Cotabato.

Upi was formerly a barrio of Dinaig (part of the province of Cotabato then). It was separated from the said town by virtue of Republic Act No. 1248, approved June 10, 1955 .

The first Municipal executive was, Maria Badoy 1955-1956) appointed as the first Municipal Mayor. In 1956, the first election wherein Mayor Ignacio Tenorio Labina, (1956-1960) a Teduray leader, was the first elected mayor of Upi and held his office for four years.

Next elected mayor -Datu Abdullah "Ugcog" Sinsuat (1960 – 1963); Datu Michael "Puti" P. Sinsuat - )1963 – 1980); Bai Fatima P. Sinsuat (1980 – 1986).

While after EDSA rervolution Datu Mohammad "Unting" Sinsuat , Appointed as Mayor (1986 – 1987) then elected as Mayor in 1987 to 1992. In 1992 election Datu Michael "Puti" P. Sinsuat wins and in 2001 the graduated vice mayor Ramon A. Piang, Sr. was elected as mayor for three terms (2001 – 2010).

In 2010 election, Piang runs as vice mayor with Ruben D. Platon, but only 11 months in service. Mayor Platon resigned, since appointed by the President Aquino as Head of Philippine Safety College.

As Elected Vice Mayor, Piang became the mayor and continued the remaining years. And in 2013 election Piang elected again as Mayor.

For this May 16, 2016 National, Local and ARMM Election, Mayor Piang’s teammates are the current Vice Mayor Alexis Platon and eight (8) Sangguniangbayan (Municipal council) members that are equally distributed to three ethnic groups in Upi, the Indigenous People, Moro and settlers. They are incumbent councilors Wilfredo Ibanez and Janito Rabelo for Teduray tribe. For the Maguindanaon tribe, incumbent councilors Norodin Musa and Michael Sinsuat , and for the settlers are councilors Myrna Lou De Vera, Rodelyn Andres, Raul Gardose and Maria Elena Teleron-Castro.

Upi COMELEC Officer Estelita Orbase said for local position, the campaign period will start from March 25- May 7 and for the national post will be on February 9 to May 7, 2016.

Orbase added that the voter’s registration was temporarily cancelled to give way for COC filing but it will resume on October 19 until October 31, 2015.
